Philosophy On War Questions Discussion
I’m working on a philosophy multi-part question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
All are based on readings which I will include in the documents, along with other class slides. PLEASE use them and refer to them.
USE FROWE READING PDF
(1) Accounts of noncombatant/combatant distinction: Frowe discusses four different accounts which attempt to establish the moral distinction between combatants and noncombatants. She argues (and summarizes arguments) for why each account is problematic.
1.First, explain what one of the accounts is and what problem Frowe identifies with it *in your own words*.
2.Next, do you think one of these accounts can be rescued from one of the challenges? Why or why not? Explain and support your answer with reasons, illustrative examples, etc.
MCMAHANS READINGS PDF
(2) Beyond the Accounts:
1.Choose either Mavrodes’s or McMahan’s accounts concerning the combatant/noncombatant distinction and explain it in your own words.
2.Next, do you think the account is correct? Why or why not? Explain and support your answer with reasons, illustrative examples, etc.
USE RODIN READING PDF
(1)Fairness and Unequal Wars: Rodin claims that there is “more bite to the fairness objection than this reply acknowledges.”
1.First, explain *in your own words* the reasons what this “more bite” is (i.e., what Rodin thinks is the issue with unequal wars).
2.One possible solution is to loosen in bello requirements for a weaker side by allowing them to engage in asymmetric tactics. Do you think this is acceptable for any of the asymmetric tactics discussed in the paper? There are different asymmetric tactics, and you don’t need to address all of them, but if your answer is “no” to all of them, make sure to address the less obvious ones (e.g., “no” to nuclear weapons vs. “no” to engaging in information warfare).
USE OTHER FROWE READING PDF
(1)Proliferation objection to drones: Frowe explains what the Proliferation Objection to UAVs is and ultimately is unsure whether it provides sufficient reason to ban the use of drones.
1.First, explain *in your own words* what the Proliferation Objection is, one reason why Frowe thinks it has merit, and one reason why Frowe is unsure about whether it succeeds.
2.Next, do you think the Proliferation Objection succeeds or not? Why?
