Use this section to tell the reader about the observed child. Gender, age, home life, languages spoken, etc. One to two paragraphs.
Physical Presence
In narrative form (paragraphs, not bulleted lists), answer SOME of the following questions:
· What stands out about him/her immediately?
· How does he/she position him/herself in space?
· How does he/she move?
· What does he/she like to do inside/outside?
· How does his/her voice, eyes, hands communicate?
· How does the child approach his/her physical needs?
· How can caregivers support the child’s physical needs?
Disposition and Temperament
Write a narrative answering some of these questions as stated above:
· How does the child greet the world?
· What are his/her feeling tones? What does your child care for deeply?
· How can caregivers/teachers support the child’s SELF.
Connections with Other People
Write a narrative answering some of these questions as stated above:
· Observe the child in his/her different contexts: home with family, center, school, playground,
· Community activities.
· Are there differences in behavior in the various contexts?
· How does he/she interact with other children in a group, one-on-one? With teachers? With family members?
· What does he/she seem to expect from others?
· How can caregivers/teachers support connections with children and adults?
Modes of Thinking and Learning
Write a narrative answering some of these questions as stated above:
· How does he/she seem to make sense of the world?
· What fascinates him/her?
· What does he/she do easily? With difficulty?
· What does he/she question? Wonder about?
· Identify children’s developmental strengths: their culture, language, family, community.
· How do these variables influence their diverse style of thinking/learning?
· How is their “style of learning” related to the various contexts and to developmental theory
· How can caregivers/teachers use observational data and developmental theory to understand ways of support the child’s thinking/learning?
Summative Thoughts
Here you write about your interpretations (your take) on the child you have been working with. Why do you think he/she does what he/she does? What would you recommend as follow-up and for instruction of him/her? What are your recommendations for the planning of Developmentally Appropriate activities? How do your activities build on children’s strengths, needs, Cultural and linguistic diversity, familial relationships? To what degree have you involved the child’s family and community?
